Calculate how many garlic cloves you need to plant, how many pounds of seed garlic to buy, and what harvest to expect based on your plot size, spacing, and garlic type. Use it to plan hardneck, softneck, or elephant garlic beds with a realistic buffer for losses and enough saved bulbs for next year's planting.

What is a Garlic Growing Calculator?

A garlic growing calculator turns bed dimensions and spacing into cloves to plant, seed weight to buy, expected harvest, and revenue. It adapts to hardneck, softneck, or elephant garlic and accounts for planting loss.

Plantable cloves = area ÷ (row spacing × clove spacing)

Seed weight (lb) = cloves ÷ cloves-per-lb

Harvest bulbs = plantable cloves × 0.9

Harvest weight = bulbs × bulb weight

How It Works

Spacing sets total plantable cloves. The calculator converts cloves to seed weight using type-specific cloves-per-pound and applies a 10% buffer for losses. Harvest assumes one bulb per surviving clove at type-specific bulb weights. Optional fields estimate seed cost and farm-stand revenue.

Example Scenarios

100 sq ft row plot, 12" rows, 6" spacing, hardneck medium: ~133 cloves, 2.7 lb seed, harvest ~120 bulbs (~22 lb).
Raised bed 4×12 ft, 8" rows, 6" spacing, softneck medium: ~144 cloves, 2.4 lb seed, harvest ~130 bulbs (~21 lb).
Elephant garlic, 50 sq ft, 12" rows, 8" spacing: ~62 cloves, 3.1 lb seed, harvest ~56 bulbs (~28 lb).

Tips for Strong Bulbs

  • Plant the biggest cloves for the biggest bulbs; eat the smalls.
  • Mulch 3-4 inches for winter protection and spring weed control.
  • Stop watering 2-3 weeks before harvest for better curing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cloves do I need to plant?

Divide your planting area by row and in-row spacing to get plant count. Each plant needs one clove. The calculator does this automatically and adds 10% extra for loss.

How many pounds of seed garlic should I buy?

Cloves per pound vary by type and bulb size. Hardneck medium averages ~50 cloves/lb, softneck ~60 cloves/lb, elephant ~20 cloves/lb. The calculator converts cloves to pounds and cost.

What yield can I expect?

Assume 10% planting loss. Each clove becomes one bulb weighing 0.14-0.25 lb for standard garlic and 0.4-0.6 lb for elephant. The tool reports total bulbs and pounds.

When should I plant and harvest?

Plant 4-6 weeks before ground freeze in cold climates or late fall/winter in mild zones. Harvest when 3-4 green leaves remain. Cure 2-3 weeks in shade with airflow.

How much seed should I save for next year?

Keep 10-20% of the best bulbs for seed. The calculator shows a suggested replant stock count and weight.

What price can I sell garlic for?

Farm stand prices range $1-3 per bulb for culinary garlic and $5-8 for elephant. Enter your expected price to project revenue.

Row vs raised bed spacing?

Rows often at 12" spacing with 6" in-row. Raised beds can tighten to 8-10" rows if soil is loose. The calculator lets you set both values.
