Good horse care depends on observing the individual animal and keeping reliable records. How the Horse Hay Intake Planner Works

Bodyweight multiplied by the selected intake percentage gives the target dry-matter mass. Entered pasture dry matter is subtracted without allowing a negative hay requirement. Remaining dry matter is divided by the hay dry-matter fraction to obtain as-fed hay.

Feeding waste is grossed up by dividing usable hay by one minus the waste fraction. Multiplying by days and horses gives the period quantity, and dividing by actual average bale weight gives bales rounded up for purchasing.

Scenario results vary the selected intake percentage to expose sensitivity. They are not automatic recommendations for overweight, underweight, growing, working, pregnant, lactating, or medically managed horses.

Model and formulas

Target DM = bodyweight × selected intake fraction

Hay as-fed before waste = remaining forage DM ÷ hay DM fraction

Purchased hay = as-fed hay ÷ (1 − waste fraction)

Worked Examples

Stored-hay period

For a 1,000-pound horse with a selected 2 percent dry-matter target and hay at 90 percent dry matter, the theoretical as-fed amount before waste is about 22.2 pounds daily. Ten percent feeding waste raises the offered/purchased planning amount to about 24.7 pounds.

Thirty-day bale plan

At roughly 24.7 pounds daily for thirty days, the plan totals about 741 pounds. With genuinely averaged 50-pound bales, rounding up gives fifteen bales. Variable bale weights justify weighing a representative sample rather than trusting a name such as “small square.”

Pasture contribution

When pasture contributes part of the selected dry-matter target, only the entered contribution is subtracted. The calculator does not estimate pasture intake from turnout hours because growth, availability, grazing behavior, and intake restriction vary widely.

These examples demonstrate arithmetic, not recommended care plans. A similarly sized horse may need a different decision because its condition, forage, work, environment, and professional instructions differ.

Keep source documents and do not round intermediate values aggressively. Compare like with like: the same unit system, measurement landmarks, equipment, time window, feed basis, and horse. The calculator cannot assess hay hygiene, digestible energy, protein, minerals, dental ability, metabolic suitability, pasture intake, or the complete ration.
