Netflix recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p and 15 Mbps for 4K. The FCC guide gives slightly higher ranges, which the calculator uses to leave headroom.
How to work out the speed you need
- List what people do at the same time during your busiest hour, usually the evening.
- Add the bandwidth for each activity from the table.
- Add about 20 to 50% headroom for Wi-Fi losses and new devices.
Example: two HD streams (16 Mbps), one video call (3 Mbps), one gamer (6 Mbps) and browsing for four people (8 Mbps) is 33 Mbps. With 50% headroom, a 50 Mbps plan would be the minimum and 100 Mbps comfortable.

How much internet speed do I need for my home?
Add up what your household does at the same time and add a buffer. Most households of three or four do well with 100 to 200 Mbps download. One or two light users can manage on 25 to 50 Mbps, and homes with several 4K streams and remote workers benefit from 300 Mbps or more.
Is 100 Mbps enough for a family of 4?
Usually, yes. 100 Mbps covers two or three HD streams, a video call and gaming at the same time. Move up if two people work from home on video calls all day or if you stream in 4K on several TVs at once.
How much upload speed do I need?
About 3 Mbps for each person on a video call at the same time, plus a few Mbps for cloud backups and security cameras. Remote workers who share large files or stream should look for 20 Mbps or more of upload.
What does the FCC consider broadband?
In March 2024 the FCC raised its fixed broadband benchmark to 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload, up from 25/3 Mbps.
How many devices can 30 Mbps support?
Device count matters less than what each device is doing. 30 Mbps handles one or two HD streams plus browsing on a few phones, but not several streams and video calls at once.
Why is my internet slow even though my plan is fast?
Wi-Fi is often the bottleneck. Distance and walls cut speeds, and older routers may not deliver the plan speed. Test with a device plugged in by cable; if that is fast, upgrade the router or add a mesh system.
