What is a Hike Turnaround Time & Daylight Planner?

A Hike Turnaround Time & Daylight Planner is a trail-planning tool that finds the earlier of an entered fixed turnaround and a return-time calculation based on official sunset, buffer, break, and route estimates. It makes the route assumptions visible so a group can inspect segment ordering, source dates, buffers, rounding, and possible conflicts before using the record in a wider trip plan.

Route arithmetic is useful only when its evidence is labeled. Measured recent group performance differs from a published rule; a GPS track differs from surveyed control; an official sunset for the correct date and timezone differs from a generic daylight table; and a resupply listing differs from direct confirmation.

It does not calculate usable or risk-free daylight and cannot observe shade, weather, injury, navigation, or closures. It cannot observe present trail, weather, river, snow, wildfire, transport, daylight, or group conditions. The responsible land manager, current official forecast and alerts, direct operator confirmation, field observations, and the concerns of the least-experienced member remain controlling inputs.

NPS trip-planning guidance emphasizes checking current alerts and closures, understanding the specific park, preparing alternatives, and notifying a trusted contact of changes. How the calculation works

The model validates ordered finite values and applies only the calibration or rule explicitly entered. It preserves ascent and descent, moving time and breaks, arrival windows and operating windows, or horizontal and sloped distances as distinct quantities.

Does a positive time, daylight, or capacity margin support continuing?

No. A positive difference only compares the numbers entered. Injury, navigation error, mud, snow, river crossings, scrambling, exposure, queues, wildlife, smoke, heat, cold, darkness, closures, transport failure, and fatigue can change independently. Current observations and conservative field decisions override the arithmetic.

How do map and GPS elevation errors affect results?

GPS, map, and digital elevation values can differ because of datum, source resolution, interpolation, canopy, terrain, sensor behavior, and route alignment. A jitter threshold changes cumulative gain and loss by design. Save the ordered points, units, datum note, source edition, and threshold so another person can reproduce the total.

What should be shared with a trusted contact?

Share the route and direction, group, expected milestones, turnaround policy, alternate exit, resupply contacts, expected return window, and the user-entered missed-plan instructions. Update the contact when plans change. A saved calculator does not send messages, monitor progress, verify reception, or start an emergency response.
