To find a birth year, subtract the age from the current year, and subtract one more if the birthday has not happened yet this year. Someone who is 30 in 2026 was born in 1996 if they have had their birthday, or 1995 if not. The calculator also works in reverse, from birth year to age, and from any date, which helps with old records.

How to calculate birth year from age

Birthday passed: birth year = current year − age

Birthday not yet: birth year = current year − age − 1

Age this year = current year − birth year (until the birthday, subtract 1)

The calculator can also work from any past or future date. Setting the date to when an age was recorded, such as a census, school record or old newspaper, gives the birth year range for genealogy.

How do I calculate my birth year from my age?

Subtract your age from the current year, then subtract one more if you have not had your birthday yet this year. In 2026, someone who is 30 was born in 1996 if their birthday has passed, or 1995 if it has not.

Why does the calculator show two birth years?

An age covers a full year between birthdays, which almost always spans two calendar years. Without knowing whether the birthday has passed, a 30-year-old in 2026 could have been born in 1995 or 1996.

What year was I born if I am 18?

In 2026, an 18-year-old was born in 2008 (birthday already this year) or 2007 (birthday still to come).

How do I find someone’s age from their birth year?

Subtract the birth year from the current year. That is the age they turn this year; until their birthday, they are one year younger. Someone born in 1990 turns 36 in 2026.

What generation am I?

Using Pew Research Center definitions: Baby Boomers 1946 to 1964, Generation X 1965 to 1980, Millennials 1981 to 1996 and Generation Z 1997 to 2012. Generation Alpha is commonly used for 2013 onward, though Pew has not set its boundaries.

How do I find a birth year from an age on an old record?

Use the record’s date, not today. A census taken on April 1, 1950 listing someone as 42 means they were born between April 2, 1907 and April 1, 1908. Set the “as of” date to the record date for the right range.
