How the no tax on tips deduction works
Qualified tips are still reported as income, then deducted on Schedule 1-A. The deduction lowers federal taxable income by up to $25,000 a year for 2025 through 2028, and is available whether you itemize or not.
| Maximum deduction | $25,000 per return |
| Phase-out | $100 per full $1,000 of income over $150,000 ($300,000 joint) |
| Requirements | Listed tipped occupation, valid Social Security number, joint return if married |
| Still taxed | Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%), most state income taxes |
Example for 2026
A single server earns $25,000 in wages and $20,000 in tips. Without the deduction, federal income tax is $3,220. Deducting the tips cuts it to $890, a saving of $2,330. Social Security and Medicare on the tips, about $1,530, are unchanged.

Frequently asked questions
Are tips tax-free now?
Partly. For 2025 through 2028 you can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips from federal taxable income. Tips are still subject to Social Security and Medicare tax, and to state income tax unless your state adopts the deduction.
What counts as qualified tips?
Voluntary cash or card tips received in an occupation on the IRS list of jobs that customarily received tips before 2025, such as servers, bartenders, hairstylists and delivery drivers. Mandatory service charges and automatic gratuities do not qualify.
Is the $25,000 limit per person?
It is per tax return. A married couple filing jointly can deduct up to $25,000 of their combined qualified tips, not $50,000.
When does the deduction phase out?
It falls by $100 for each full $1,000 of modified AGI above $150,000 ($300,000 joint). A single filer with $160,000 of income and $25,000 of tips can deduct $24,000.
Can self-employed workers claim it?
Yes, if the tips are earned in a listed occupation, but the deduction cannot exceed the net profit from that business. Workers in certain professional service fields are excluded.
