What does this ski length calculator show?

A ski length calculator gives a starting length band from your height and intended discipline. This tool applies the published offsets in Salomon’s ski-selection guide and shows both endpoints. It does not select a particular ski, predict your performance, or turn a height measurement into a complete equipment fitting.

Begin with the type of skiing you actually plan to do. The available choices preserve the source’s terminology, including separate backcountry and touring entries. Those labels describe equipment guidance only. Choosing a backcountry option does not assess a route, weather, snowpack or avalanche danger. Consult the current regional avalanche forecast and local information before touring.

The result is a continuous reference band. A shop might stock only two or three discrete lengths for a particular model, and none is guaranteed to sit exactly at an endpoint. Construction, intended use, your build and personal preference remain part of the purchase decision. An available length inside the band is a candidate to discuss, not an automatic recommendation.

This implementation deliberately collects height and discipline rather than adding controls with unsupported effects. Salomon discusses build and technical level, but this particular guide does not supply a numeric weight correction or an ability coefficient. The calculator therefore leaves those considerations to model-specific guidance and fitting. It also does not use boot sole length to change a ski length.

The adult comparison accepts heights from 140 to 210 centimeters. That operating range is a limit chosen for this tool, not a manufacturer statement about who can ski or which equipment fits. Junior equipment, unusually short or tall adult measurements, and racing requirements need a more specific source. US inputs are converted to centimeters before applying the same published rule.

Method and calculation

Each discipline has a lower and upper offset in centimeters. The model adds those two values independently to measured height. It neither averages across disciplines nor interpolates between ability levels. A negative offset means a ski shorter than the entered height; a positive offset means longer. The resulting endpoints retain the relationship specified by the selected guide.

The chart and table display identical endpoint values in the selected unit system. Calculations use the exact inch-to-centimeter conversion, while displayed values are rounded for readability. Switching units converts the measurement already entered and clears old results. Recalculate after changing height or discipline so the exported result describes the current inputs.

Do not interpret the width of the band as a statistical confidence interval. It is a published equipment reference, not an error estimate. The calculator does not know which lengths are manufactured, available locally or appropriate after a demo. Keep the exact model chart alongside this general guide when making a shortlist.

Worked examples

A 175 cm all-mountain shortlist

Enter 175 cm and choose all-mountain. The calculated band is 165–175 cm. If a particular model is sold in 164, 172 and 180 cm, the calculator does not invent a 165 cm product or declare the 172 cm option a verified fit. Take the reference to the model’s own sizing information and a fitter. The useful output is a clearly documented starting band, together with the assumptions that produced it.

The same height, another discipline

Keep 175 cm but choose on-piste. The resulting endpoints become 160 and 170 cm. That change comes entirely from the selected source category, not from a change in your body or ability. It illustrates why comparing only the length printed on two different ski types can be misleading. Record the discipline as well as the number whenever you share the result with someone helping you compare equipment.

US units without changing the skier

A person measuring 70 inches is 177.8 cm tall. The all-mountain calculation produces 167.8–177.8 cm, displayed as approximately 66.1–70 inches in US mode. Those are the same physical endpoints. If an inch display appears unusual beside centimeter product labels, switch back and recalculate. Do not re-enter the centimeter number into an inches field; that would describe a different height and should trigger the operating-range check.

Practical applications

  • Prepare a shop visit: Bring a measured height and intended discipline rather than a single remembered length. The result helps organize the conversation, while the fitter can consider the actual ski construction, current boots and intended use.
  • Compare equipment families: Change the discipline while keeping height fixed to see how the source band changes. Use that comparison to understand the guide, rather than treating several different equipment families as interchangeable purchase options.
  • Read secondhand listings: Compare a listed length with the reference and ask for the exact model and year. The calculation does not inspect damage, verify binding serviceability or tell you that a used package is ready to ski.

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculator include my weight?

No numeric weight adjustment is applied. The selected Salomon guide supplies height-relative discipline bands, not a weight-to-length formula. Adding an invented coefficient would make the output appear more individualized than its evidence allows. Tell a fitter your weight and consult the exact model chart when deciding which available size to try.

Why is there no beginner or expert multiplier?

The source discusses technical level without defining a numeric adjustment for this guide. A selector that shifted the answer by an arbitrary amount would not be auditable. The tool therefore leaves ability out of the arithmetic. A product-specific chart or a fitting can incorporate ability using guidance that actually applies to that equipment.

Is every length inside the band equally suitable?

No. A general band identifies a starting area for comparison, not a set of certified matches. The exact model may offer only a few lengths, and construction or personal preference can matter. Use the table to record the source endpoints, then narrow the options with model-specific information and a shop discussion or demo.

Can I use it for a child?

This version is an adult reference with an explicit operating-height limit. It does not implement a junior sizing chart, growth allowance or child-specific fitting process. Even when a child’s height falls inside the numeric limits, that does not make the adult scope applicable. Use the manufacturer’s junior equipment guidance with a qualified fitter.

Does a touring result tell me a route is suitable?

No. A touring or backcountry label here selects an equipment-length band only. The tool has no route, weather or snowpack data and does not assess avalanche danger. Check the applicable regional avalanche forecast and local conditions, and make terrain and travel decisions using appropriate training and current information rather than this sizing reference.

Will the calculator tell me whether my bindings fit?

No. Ski length and binding compatibility are different questions. Boot sole interfaces, installed adjustment limits and the complete system require separate checks. A calculated ski band cannot replace a technician’s inspection, adjustment and mechanical release testing. Bring the actual boots and skis when arranging that service rather than relying on a sizing export.
