Virginia take-home pay in 2026

A Virginia paycheck has four taxes withheld: federal income tax, Virginia income tax, Social Security and Medicare. Virginia taxes income in four brackets from 2% to 5.75% after a standard deduction of $8,750 ($17,500 for married couples filing jointly) and a $930 personal exemption per person. Virginia cities and counties do not add a local income tax.

This calculator uses the 2026 federal tax brackets, the $16,100 federal standard deduction for single filers ($32,200 joint), and the 2026 Social Security wage base of $184,500. It works for salaried and hourly jobs, including overtime.

Examples

$70,000 salary, single, paid biweekly

Virginia taxable income is $70,000 − $8,750 − $930 = $60,320. The first $17,000 is taxed at 2%, 3% and 5%, and the rest at 5.75%, for $3,211 of Virginia tax. Federal income tax is about $6,570 and Social Security plus Medicare is $5,355. Take-home pay is $54,864 a year, or $2,110.16 per paycheck.

$140,000 household salary, married filing jointly

With the $17,500 joint deduction and two exemptions, Virginia tax is $6,679 and federal income tax is about $13,140. Take-home pay is $109,471 a year, or $4,210.41 every two weeks.

Minimum wage, and $25 an hour with overtime

At Virginia's $12.77 minimum wage, 40 hours a week earns $26,562 a year and about $437.87 a week after taxes. At $25 an hour with five overtime hours a week at $37.50, gross pay is $61,750 and weekly take-home is about $943.45, or $20.97 per hour worked. Overtime may also qualify for the federal no tax on overtime deduction when you file.

The brackets are the same for single and joint filers and have not been adjusted for inflation since 1990, which is why the top rate starts at just $17,000.

Virginia compared with Maryland, D.C. and other states

Take-home pay on a $75,000 salary for a single filer in 2026, counting state income tax only; Virginia takes $3,498 at that salary. Maryland's county income taxes (about 2.25% to 3.3%) are not included, so a Maryland paycheck is smaller than shown. D.C. residents pay D.C. tax; Virginians who work in D.C. pay Virginia tax only.

Other Virginia taxes to budget for

The general sales tax is 5.3% in most of Virginia, 6% in Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads and Central Virginia, and 7% in the Historic Triangle; groceries are taxed at a reduced 1%. Cities and counties also charge an annual personal property tax on vehicles and set their own real estate tax rates. Virginia does not tax Social Security, and residents 65 and older may qualify for an age deduction of up to $12,000.

Estimate these costs with the sales tax calculator and the property tax estimator. Employers pay Virginia unemployment tax, which is not withheld from your pay; the employer payroll tax calculator shows the employer side.

Getting a closer match to your pay stub

Enter benefit deductions as annual amounts: multiply the amount on your pay stub by your number of paychecks. Traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums reduce Virginia taxable wages as well as federal. If your stub shows Roth 401(k) contributions, add them as post-tax deductions.

Virginia withholding is based on the exemptions on your Form VA-4. Each dependent adds a $930 exemption, which this calculator does not include, so parents will see slightly lower Virginia tax than shown. For federal withholding, review your Form W-4 with the W-4 withholding calculator.
